Don,

>>and now is called the REPUBLIC of TAIWAN.

As of today, the TI movement still has not succeed in
changing the name. It is still ROC, not ROT.
China claimed they would use military power if Taiwan
changed the name.

>>I remember when I lived in TAIWAN how the students my age
>>were complaining how bad TRUMAN was for stopping
>> Macarther plan to invade China. And that was back only
>>in the late 70's. Also I would watch the many Kuomintang
>>affairs with their strong preachings of how they will
>>take back the mainland.

I do not know who your friends were when you were back in Taiwan but their thoughts were not common.
I was in high school and college in the 70's. Frankly, the tone had changed a lot in those years already. No one really believed in take China back after Taiwan UN seat was taken away.

>>Now it is different since the KMT is just a fraction of
>>what it use to be, but in the not so long ago past they
>>did believe in the fight to recover the mainland.

KMT started absorb native Taiwanese systematically since
the 60's and 70's. Recover China was a slogan KMT used to
solidify the loyalty of old solidiers from China.
Even those fled to Taiwan with KMT did not believe in
recovering China since the 70's.

>>An issue that the mainland has against Taiwan is the >>Chinese wealth that they claim was stolen by Chiang and >>the infamous Soong sisters. If Taiwan no longer considers >>themselves China, then why not return those Chinese >>treasures, and hopefully that would ease some of the >>tensions.

I do not think it is up to Taiwan. China lost so much
land to the foreign powers in the last 2 centries,
it is considered to be "shame of the state" to lose
any land they considered to be part of China.
Returning those treasure is a non issue. I doubt it would
change China's determination to recover Taiwan.
