Anybody getting poorer with this down draft ? Viewpoint:

Seems that if smart money is either moving with the trends (buying on rally's and shorting on drops) then the speculation will continue indefinitely with no clear bottom in sight.

Threads that are filled with bears or bulls who feel confident to trade these markets suggests to me that the level of volatility is not enough to shake out the average speculator.

The glib consumer confidence index reports are also indications that this downturn in equity valuations has not had sufficient impact to curb debt-driven consumer spending.

And then we get statements like this:
"AOL Time Warner Inc. Chief Executive Gerald Levin said on Tuesday that despite the
current market climate, he is ``very confident'' about the ability of the world's largest
Internet and media company to meet the 2001 financial targets it laid out earlier this
year. "

Retailer Best Buy Inc. (NYSE:BBY - news) jumped $3.55 to $40.35 after it said sales of digital products like DVD players and cameras helped push its earnings up 16 percent, and the consumer electronics retailer said fiscal 2002 profits should top forecasts.

So plainly the money is far from all spent. And the apparent bottomless pit of easy credit will continue.
