Thanks. I like the parts about the accountability, and the local school decisions on teachers. At our local school, I believe they are carrying some incompetent teachers because some are tenured and there is a shortage of teachers in CA.

I posted previously on the dangers of too much pressure to succeed. The teaching becomes focused on the test, and not on real education. The CA system has a tough test, the STAR test, and there are significant awards associated with it. Schools that improve are rewarded, both as a school and as individuals. Those that don't are in real trouble, because the staff has no incentive to stay. Although I am definitely for accountability and some measurability, we need to be careful that it is not overemphasized vs real learning.

I did note that the article cites American politicians, but Liebermann, not Bush. Score one for the New Democrats. :)
