It still won't be hard for them to do better, overall, than the free services have - as businesses, that is.

No doubt...80-90% of Internet IPO's in the last 3 years are going to zero(if they aren't there already). But I suspect those few web portals that due survive will have ample subscribers for fee based services as well as their free/advertising driven services.
