John Fowler. Re: "I thought we hit bottom several times, and was wrong. I wonder what other folks think." I think the buyers are still sitting on the sidelines. To give you an idea of what "value" buyers consider a good entry point, Bill Miller (Legg Mason) starts buying when a beaten down company hits 10 times cash flow. That's where he entered IBM several years ago and made a lot of money.

Applying that to Intel, using a .73 EPS for 2001 and another .77 in depreciation/amortization, that suggests serious buying at around $15.

Looking at Intel's recent history, for what it's worth, the low could be a little higher ($18-$20). Of course, if Intel guides down from the current consensus, it could go lower and if Intel surprises on the upside, it could be higher. But that's a couple of benchmarks, which would suggest we have a way to go.

HL

PS Mr. Miller also bought one million more shares of Amazon at $11, so his judgement may not be all that good or representative.:)

The "sickos" are not only having their day, they are having a freaking party. With the Nasdaq down almost 70% from it's (admittedly artificial) highs, and as CNBC reported, 44% of the Nasdaq 100 at a 52 week low today

John I think it's important to realize that we aren't just coming down from artificial highs. We're coming down from a mania. What price did tulip bulbs settle at?

John,

In my opinion we could hit 1500, but that is almost 80% down. In either case, I think the vast bulk of the damage is done, and the more important question is how long and how fast to stabilize and come back? In the '73-'74 bear I believe the DOW took almost 10 YEARS to come back, the NAZ did it more quickly, but still over several years. One of the keys will be how quickly the 'last mile' is conquered, and broadband made widely available at a reasonable price. Right now, it looks like it will take longer than many expected, so that's a rather large stumbling block in my book. I remember all the talk about the sub 1k PC not too long ago. Dell is now running ads for an $899 1GHZ PIII system. Somebody better come up with some 'cpu sucking software' <ggg> quickly, or else!!

Regards,
John

PS - I see that National Semi's Halla made comments today that he thinks there is another 6-9 months to go before a semi bottom. Says he has never seen such a sharp slowdown...
