The books I am enjoying the most look at the Great Depression in the context of World War I and the aftermath, e.g., the different ways the four major countries, US, UK, France and Germany, handled the gold standard, foreign exchange, international banking.

A lot of academic research is available online, too. Professional economists put links to pdfs on their university webpages. I've downloaded tons more than I've read. Lots of new stuff about the Federal Reserve by people who have read the minutes of Fed meetings, where the different members argue about what to do and voice their opinions about what's going on.
