NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Investors remained cautious Wednesday following Tuesday's bloodbath and appeared unwilling to commit to new positions. A bounce in U.S. stocks may thus prove elusive as profit warnings continue to clutter the tape.

Checking the futures markets, June S&P 500 futures edged up 5.40 points, or 0.5 percent, but were trading roughly 0.80 point below fair value, according to HL Camp & Co. Nasdaq futures, meanwhile, added 1.50 points, or 0.1 percent, reversing earlier losses.

In the government bond arena, Treasury prices slipped, with losses clustered in the 30-year issue.

The 10-year Treasury note was off 1/8 to yield ($TNX) 4.945 percent while the 30-year government bond gave up 10/32 to yield ($TYX) 5.485 percent.

Meanwhile, Fed Chief Alan Greenspan will be speaking on trade policy at 10 a.m.

In the currency arena, dollar/yen gained 0.3 percent to 125.82 while euro/dollar rose 0.4 percent to 0.9006.
