Thanks for your comments. I agree that getting our people back right away should be a top priority. I think President Bush is working hard at that. I hope they are home soon and all this is behind us. On the political issue, I respect your point of view, it certainly is a complicated issue, and I do not claim to know the answers.

John

>>The most important thing is to get our people back ASAP.<<

I agree. For a possible Court-Martial. If sensitive data and equipment is now in the hands of the Chinese this is inexcusable. If they did not destroy the equipment and erase all data then I feel those responsible should be prosecuted when they are returned.

The problem right now is getting them back from the Chinese, who hold them accountable for the death of their pilot. Bullsh**. A supersonic fighter somehow begin chased down by a prop-driven behemoth and run into? Laughable.

I am sick of sensitive US equipment and data being lost or stolen. First, an F111 Stealth fighter is lost over Bosnia, and is right now probably in pieces spread across labs in China, Russia, and Yugoslavia. Next, a high level FBI spy is uncovered who did over 15 years worth of incredible damage to this country. Now, a 24 member crew LANDS A US SPY PLANE IN "ENEMY" TERRITORY! If the plane was landed intact this is inexcusable. I would rather them have ditched the thing in the ocean! Right now, that plance is being GUTTED and taken apart piece by piece for every scrap of technology.

Whose call was this on the airplane, and how fast can we get a Court Martial underway?

Scots40, re: "the China situation ..." I agree entirely. Even if GWB has to declare China's actions to be an "act of war", getting back our men and material is of paramount importance. The Chinese have a history of ignoring precendent and of respecting authority. Unfortunately, some of our Texan leaders have chosen to ignore those lessons.

All or nothing is something that the Chinese undertand well. "Tell your people to quiet the masses. Tell them to stay calm. I want your streets to be in peace before I speak ..."

And then, were I the President, I would give China 24 hours to decide between continuing trade -- or zero trade and the establishment of Taiwan (in balance with Israel) as the premier test sites for the latest in U.S. arms and weaponry.

Unfortunately, GWB gave his "China speech" today with all the character of an eight-year-old. He looked down, read the cards, turned his back, and then ran away from reporters (see the circulating news video at the LA Times and/or NY Times for details).

Folks ... you voted for this guy and I didn't. If you have changed your mind, maybe we could all write letters to his mom and get GWB to stand down and let his heart-attack-ridden V.P. run the country :-(
