Rocky, I understand that the commander of every air vehicle in the U.S. armed forces has the ability to blow their vehicle into "kingdom come". The fact is that 24 men on a sensitive airship landed their airplane on Chinese soil without the use of parachutes ...

The Chinese may well be right. If 24 U.S. airmen are so chicken-shit as to land a U.S. Spy-Airship on Chinese soil, the Chinese may well have the right to board and examine that ship. They could have and should have buried their airship at sea. They didn't and they landed it on Chinese soil. If they had any sense, they would have sent a message to the Seals, and parachuted to safety.

GWB really only had one choice when he addresed the public. He should have defended our men and demanded their return. He should have offered a 100% trade war and a 100% military war as the only options. And, he should have set a date and time at which these options would expire.

But no ... he meandered in front of the cameras and the scurried away. As a result, the Chinese have us exactly where they want us.

A year ago, we had a corrupt Democrat as President and our economy was booming. Since them, the NASD has been cut to 1/3rd its original value and our new, Republican President still hasn't learned how to deal with 3rd-world countries.

If you want investment advice and you haven't read every word in the Bible, today may be the right time to start.

Rocky, you are so right that it makes me sick to see what actually happened in the China Sea.

I agree. For a possible Court-Martial. If sensitive data and equipment is now in the hands of the Chinese this is inexcusable. If they did not destroy the equipment and erase all data then I feel those responsible should be prosecuted when they are returned.

The problem right now is getting them back from the Chinese, who hold them accountable for the death of their pilot. Bullsh**. A supersonic fighter somehow begin chased down by a prop-driven behemoth and run into? Laughable.

I am sick of sensitive US equipment and data being lost or stolen. First, an F111 Stealth fighter is lost over Bosnia, and is right now probably in pieces spread across labs in China, Russia, and Yugoslavia. Next, a high level FBI spy is uncovered who did over 15 years worth of incredible damage to this country. Now, a 24 member crew LANDS A US SPY PLANE IN "ENEMY" TERRITORY! If the plane was landed intact this is inexcusable. I would rather them have ditched the thing in the ocean! Right now, that plance is being GUTTED and taken apart piece by piece for every scrap of technology.

Whose call was this on the airplane, and how fast can we get a Court Martial underway?

Rocky, because of the impact of the latest incident on companies doing business with both China and Taiwan, it is worthwhile responding to your and others' concerns. My information comes from people who have flown the EP-3 and know the danger of allowing top secret equipment to fall into the wrong hands. Those in the know say that, first of all, the crew very likely used an axe or similar equipment on board to destroy all the sensitive equipment. Second, many of the recording instruments and tapes are equipped with small explosive caps that can be detonated in an instant in order to destroy the equipment and the tapes.

Third, if the Chinese board the aircraft in order to learn more about its mission, (which is considered an illegal act under international law), they will of course learn things they probably didn't know before. If they do learn things, they will be very upset to know how much information can be detected by these aircraft--even ordinary fax transmissions and phone calls!

It is unlikely that much, if any equipment will fall into Chinese hands, at least if the Administration handles this crisis under accepted rules of diplomacy. There is no need to make threats, particularly in public, as this does nothing but play to popular opinion, and to play up to jingoism. Under the accepted rules of diplomacy, the crew will be returned in short order, and arrangements will be made to repair the aircraft sufficiently to allow it to return to its base. The weather in Hainan is excellent at this time of year, and the Chinese food is also good.

A few cool heads are needed, and my only worry is that some kind of symbolic "action" or other posturing will worsen the situation to the point where everyone, including the shareholders of companies doing business in the area, suffer needlessly. As a retired foreign service reserve officer, I know what I'm talking about.
