re:"So you were against the protesters in Tianamen Square?"

Man, I don't know how you got from where I was to Tianamen Square, but no I wasn't really against what they were doing, I just thought they were pushing too far too fast....it was obvious to me that evening that they were going to be squashed....they were too immoderate and didn't allow the government to save face, they should have taken a few victories and backed off a little while. You may recall that the Chinese government had already made huge concessions and changes in the direction of democracy. I always thought that what Gorbachev wanted to do the USSR was the sensible way to accomplish change, but he of course lost and you see the result in Russia. In Russia the liberals won and in China the conservatives won. Democracy will come to China but it won't and shouldn't be on our terms. Alienating them and creating a bogeyman there will set progress back 30 years, ie to the time of Nixon. I have visited both places and the difference is night and day...... China is booming relative to Russia; the people in China are the friendliest I've met anywhere and anxious to meet Americans and speak English; this is in contrast to the Russians who were sullen and without smiles and humor.
