Excellent post, and I certainly appreciate it. I agree with everything you said.

My main question, however, is not about risk. I accept risk as a fundamental part of the equation. It cannot be avoided. I know there are no sure things in the stock market any more than there are no sure things almost anywhere else.

My question is, "What are we taking risks for?" If we risk capital for growth and future appreciation, that is investing, in my opinion. We are seeking to help create new wealth and hope to realize some of that new wealth for ourselves.

But, as you know, there are other kinds of "investing" that have nothing to do with new wealth. With these strategies we are trying to capture wealth that already belongs to someone else. This is where I have a problem.

I admit my lack of full understanding of how a lot of things work with stocks, and the mechanics which apply to that stock getting from the company to me. I always thought that when I bought a stock I was investing in the company, that I was helping them to achieve their goals of creating new wealth.

If this is not true, if I am only playing footsie with market makers, then I am in the wrong game. Kind of late in life to be figuring that out. But, as they say, better late than never.

Anyway, thanks muchly for your post. You obviously know your stuff, and I am only an English major.
