Sterilzation is a process the Fed used that prevents imported gold from increasing the domestic money supply. It may have involved selling an equivalent amount of bonds, but I'm not sure of the exact mechanism.

Americans unusual that so many own (are paying off) their own home. In most the world, like Japan, many couple live in their parents home (so no mortgage), either with or without parents...Think about the quality of life you could have without a mortgage payment.

Of course, Japanese also save 20-25% (there's your mortgage payment)....but it wouldn't surprise me if they dip in that account, and binge now and then on vacations, luxury items..
