The nearest friendly country close to Hainan is the Philippines, at least 600 miles away. The loss of our bases there was not due to Clinton, although they were closed in 1992. The Philippine Senate rejected our offer to renew the contract for the bases in 1991. The US military presence in the Philippines was a point of contention in the Philippines for some time before that. The nearest country to Hainan, other than China, is VietNam.

This is a specious debate. Having viewed the pictures of the damage to the aircraft it is astounding that the plane was able to land at all. If Hainan Island is closest, I guess that's what I would have done. JLA
