Agilent Technologies Demonstrates Industry's Fastest 2 Gb Fibre Channel Performance With IBM Ultrastar Disk Drives
Emerging 2 Gb/s Fibre Channel Technology Addresses Need for Greater Bandwidth and Performance in Storage Area Networks
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 4, 2001-- To address the rapid growth in Internet traffic, storage area networking (SAN) manufacturers are moving to the 2 Gigabit per second (2 Gb/s) standard and demanding greater bandwidth and performance. In response, Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:A - news) today announced the industry's highest reported performance results for (2 Gb/s) Fibre Channel communication in a test using the Agilent HHBA-5221 host bus adapter (HBA) card with IBM's Ultrastar 36LZX 10,000 RPM disk drives. Agilent now offers both the broadest selection of 2 Gb/s Fibre Channel components and the highest demonstrated performance, solidifying its leadership position in this emerging technology for storage networking.

In the tests, the Agilent HBA scaled its performance up to 57,000 input-output operations per second (IOPS). This performance is necessary to keep up with peak database requests called for by today's update-intensive online transaction applications, such as in the airline industry. For example, a SAN configured with Agilent's 2Gb HBA and IBM Ultrastar drives can continue delivering fast system response to ticketing agents' flight schedule queries, regardless of how many other queries have been made to the database.

``We are extremely pleased with Agilent's performance test results using our Ultrastar disk drives,'' said Gregory Piligian, director of IBM's Ultrastar Hard Disk Drive Business. ``This impressive performance reaffirms the superior capability of IBM's 2 Gb Fibre Channel drives. As the worldwide leader in storage technology, IBM continues to provide the most advanced storage solutions.''

``IBM is a driving force behind the enterprise storage market's move to 2 Gb/s SAN solutions,'' said Bob Whitson, worldwide marketing manager for Agilent's Storage Networking Division. ``IBM's 2 Gb/s Fibre Channel interfaces open up significant connection option for server and storage OEMs. We look forward to continuing to work with IBM to create more high-performance options for the SAN market.''

Benchmark Test Configuration and Results

To conduct the benchmark performance tests, Agilent used the industry-standard IOmeter test suite with Windows NT® Server v4.0, and included six IBM Ultrastar 36LZX 2 Gb Fibre Channel drives and an Agilent HHBA-5221 2 Gb/s HBA. The IBM Ultrastar drives were configured to simulate database applications and audio/video servers. Benchmark tests confirmed that Agilent's HBA performance scaled with demand and reached a data transfer rate of 57,000 IOPS. A leading competitor's 2 Gb HBA demonstrated a maximum capacity of 30,000 IOPS.

Peripheral Concepts will have their June conference...

Network Storage Showing Continued Growth, According to Peripheral Concepts Inc.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 2001--Newer applications and advances in technology are fueling an extraordinary growth in high-performance external storage, according to the 2001 edition of the SAN Report released by Peripheral Concepts Inc.

With revenues exceeding $30 billion, storage will surpass direct server revenue in 2001. Both SAN and dedicated NAS revenues have more than doubled in 2000. They should triple again by 2003, as indicated below. Six leading vendors cover more than 85% of the market revenue.

OPEN SYSTEM SAN AND NAS
Disk Shipment Revenues ($ Billion)

1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003

NAS Dedicated 0.4 0.75 1.7 3.0 4.5 5.7
SAN 0.8 2.0 4.0 7.5 11.5 14.5

Fibre Channel (FC) switches have played a vital role in the development of SANs. The switch market has grown five-fold in 2000, and is expected to reach $2.9 billion in 2003, in spite of prices dropping 30% per year. Both HBA and router revenue have grown three-fold in 2000, while the hub market has slowed down, showing practically no growth from its 1999 revenue.

Significant progress was accomplished in the implementation of reliable management of SANs. Virtualization has received considerable attention. It plays a key role in solving the centralization problem. The total storage management revenue is expected to reach $6 billion by 2003. Storage resource management is the fastest-growing segment.

This report analyzes five independent user surveys involving more than 1,000 medium and large IT installations, many of which had consolidated storage. With strong support from several powerful industry leaders, IP storage development stands today where FC was four years ago, but its development is likely to be faster than FC. Pros and cons are analyzed and revenues projected through 2004.

The report contains more than 400 pages. It identifies 50+ companies that are leading the development of SAN, and are candidates for partnership. Characteristics of nearly 50 products are detailed in Feature matrices that allow product comparison. An Executive summary is available on the Web site.

Peripheral Concepts Inc. is a leading consulting firm specializing in storage and storage management. The company profile and the report table of contents can be viewed on the Web at www.periconcepts.com under Reports.

Comment on NAB, Have read pr pieces from NAB for 4-5 years now. This year was the one where storage was featured very prominently and given emphasis. Nice.
