The study, from International Data Corp. (IDC), says that the 3G market for mobile network infrastructure in Western Europe will top the $78 billion mark between 2000 and 2004. Despite the doom and gloom that many experts have predicted for the 3G market, in the wake of the huge sums of money the carriers have spend on their licenses, IDC predicts there will be a healthy 16.3 million 3G network users in Western Europe by 2004. Eamonn Kennedy, a research analyst with the research firm's European Service Provider Infrastructure (EPSI) program, said that network operators are now trying to come up with "sticky" services. On top of this, equipment vendors themselves are encouraging the development of new applications by entering joint ventures or providing venture capital seed money, he said. The report, "3G Mobile Networks: What's in It for Infrastructure Vendors in Western Europe," also predicts that the growth in 3G will come from upgraders from existing (GSM) networks, as well as from new applications that will be developed in the year ahead. Network operators, said Kennedy, will be eager to deploy new network capabilities to gain an early foothold in what will become a lucrative market. This will he said, result in an early surge in demand for infrastructure. Delving into the report reveals that IDC expects the early interest in 3G to focus on Wideband Code Division Multiplex Architecture (CDMA) rather than competing systems such as Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), which come under the 3G umbrella. This emphasis on E-CDMA over EDGE will, the study said, stem from the fact that the former 3G subset technology is better suited to city areas where calls are expected to be at a higher density - EDGE technology will be used later on as 3G networks roll out to more urban and country areas, where call densities are less.
