nice post, gst. the prob with fee-based internet sites is that most consumers don't want it. <g> which is why it was free in the first place. <g> there are a few sites like the online wsj that apparently get away with charging a fee. perhaps because you really do get value-added by access to the gold mine of archives. but also more probably because the parent company has enough financial resources and journalistic clout to set those terms. (tsc or realmoney or whatever you want to call it doesn't appear as successful, again for the reasons i cite: financial resources and journalistic clout.)

of course we are in an era where basic business model assumptions that pumped the bubble up are being discredited. <vbg>

ps. william of course wears rose-colored glasses, at least on line. who knows what he really thinks. and who the fuck cares? i don't. his refusal to deal with the real issues regarding investing in bubble stocks during a horrendous bear market i consider a real crime.

pps. sorry for my latest diatribe on that sorry subject. it is just something i still feel very strongly about.

regards as always, rob

A very risky move which can only be considered in light of a broader transition to a fee for service internet -- the model is not exactly proven and they are going to have to "bet the farm". They really have no choice but to roll the dice. If it works they could do well -- but if it goes poorly?

GST,

This is correct although fee based is coming everywhere on the net. Most firms that provided email with information or let's say free site monitoring service are now charging. I receive emails all the time that the service that was being offered either has a fee now or is being discontinued due to advertising not paying for it. The most recent was from Free Edger.
