important, topical question: if China attacks Taiwan, should we get involved and to what degree?

We should honor our Treaties first and foremost. Leaving a lot of issues in limbo may turn out to be the most prudent strategy. Economic changes may bring about better results than diplomatic efforts.

That said Taiwan should be able to defend itself and I imagine trade and re-supply could eventually drag us in. Taiwan is mostly an embarassment to mainland China, a very real example of the superiority of free-market capitalism, like Hong Kong. China would likely trade straight up for Hainon Duo (complete with all US aircraft and crew) which would show their nationalistic hypocrisy.;)
