Nokia: Not alone in broadband layoffs
Discouraged by Taiwan loss, Covad freeze
Four months ago, Nokia's top brass were promising to be one of the top three vendors in the world. But showcase client Covad has faltered, the expected win at Chunghwa/Taiwan was taken away by Alcatel's "world's lowest price", and breakthroughs in Europe have been few. Targeted European CLECs are developing financing problems just like in the states. Under financial pressure from the diminished cell phone growth and stock price drop, Nokia's cut back on their US DSL operation.

Others are feeling the pain, and likely to follow suit. Nortel, Lucent, Cisco, and ADC all have large companywide layoffs, and none has been willing to go on the record that the DSL division will be spared. But general layoffs are just one step in company cost reduction; we are sure several of these companies are considering entire business segments to eliminate. The stock market has made obvious the challenges for Copper Mountain and Paradyne. We've previously reported that essentially every DSLAM vendor in the West has cut 2001 forecasts, except Alcatel & Siemens; we hope none choose to drop the entire product line.
