FedEx sees earnings below estimates
NEW YORK, April 4 (Reuters) - FedEx Corp. (NYSE:FDX - news), the world's No. 1 air express package shipper, on Wednesday warned that its fourth-quarter earnings are likely to be lower than it previously forecast as the economic downturn cuts further into demand for its freight services.

Memphis-based FedEx had previously forecast that it would report earnings per share of 85 cents to 90 cents for the quarter to the end of May.

``Economic conditions have deteriorated more than we anticipated, which is adversely impacting our volumes,'' said FedEx Chief Financial Officer Alan Graf Jr. ``If these volume trends continue, we think it is unlikely that we will hit our prior earnings forecast of $0.85 to $0.90 per share for the fourth quarter.''

FedEx expects to report express package volume within the U.S. dropped 4.4 percent in March from the year-earlier month, against its previous forecast of a 1 to 2 percent decline.

The company also said economic uncertainty ``is making it extremely difficult to forecast future financial results.''

Earlier in March, FedEx rival United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE:UPS - news) said it expects a slowing U.S. economy, harsh North American weather and currency weakness in the euro to hurt its results in the first half of the year.
