I can't believe anyone seriously proposes turning this into a shooting war. I was telling one of the Hawks at work: "Imagine this happened off OUR coast and that we had a downed F-16 pilot lost, then we forced the plane to land at Moffet NAS. How fast would we return it? What if China wanted to bomb us while we beat around the Bush about returning it?"

Some people are SO clueless. Yeah, provoking China (which a Chinese friend of mine says is undergoing near revolutionary internal changes between pro-West and hard-liners), that's a great idea. NOT!

The statement that we were somehow caught with our pants down is shockingly ignorant. These flights have been going on along the Chinese coast for over 20 years. The risk was always there. It is calculated. On that there can be no reasonable dispute but then you are not about reasonable disputes. JLA
