John Kennedy was the commander of PT 109, which was disabled in enemy waters. Kennedy was instrumental in rescuing several members of his crew. They were stranded on an island for several days before rescue.

I like good war movies. Currently, my favorite treatment of World War Two is a miniseries, The Winds of War, with Robert Mitchum. I also like its sequel, War and Remembrance.

Quite a few Americans, like my mother, adulated FDR. If you have ever seen Sunrise at Campobello, with Ralph Bellamy, you would see that overcoming his polio was widely regarded as a matter of character that brought the man greater stature.

Clinton is the success story of the young con artist on the make. We may indulge him, but we don't quite respect him.

FDR was, indeed, born rich. So were most of the Founding Fathers, rich or upper middle class. That does not prevent us from appreciating their finer qualities.

FDR was not a deep thinker, nor do I think he was particularly committed to socialism. However, he had a respect for intellectuals, and intellectuals at the time were biased towards central planning, so the New Deal took that turn. It didn't do much good in combatting the Depression. On the other hand, it may have saved us from something worse, like Huey Long.........
