Perhaps you will eventually find the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, and Jesus' teachings about forgiveness. I have found them and I haven't been to Church since last Easter. Perhaps it is ironic to be debating religion on the President George W. Bush board, but it is so much more gratifying than the subjects on our former president's board. "http://www.siliconinvestor.com/subject.aspx?subjectid=18974 I suppose there is something in the Bible for everyone to dislike, but you have pointed out some very interesting passages. The stories about Humankind's struggle to overcome evil are littered with bloodshed and failure. Do you think they should be censored out? Would that make the Bible better, do you think? Or would it make the Bible more like Disneyland where pleasantries can be found more easily? My original comments addressed the probability that Jesus taught in terms that could be understood in the language and science of His day. Surely you must grant that the science of those days was more imperfect than ours and considered only by a few. The strength of the Bible lies partly in the fact that it has endured so long and so many people have found guidance in it for so many different situations. I agree with you that too many have justified human weaknesses on Biblical grounds. They are simply wrong. I understand that you practice Zen or so it seems from your moniker. If that's the case, why do you feel such hostility? Doesn't Zen teach that everything is subject to change and that suffering and discontentment are the result of attachment to circumstances and things which, by their nature, are impermanent? Doesn't it teach meditation as a means to rid one's self of hostility? Why then do you feel compelled to search the Bible for things that don't meet your standard of reason? You observe that the Bible is full of hate, killing, sexism, racism, religious intolerance, bigotry, hypocrisy, contradictions, unfulfilled prophesies, and pure lunacy. I suggest that you study it for love, compassion, and forgiveness. Perhaps if you read those parts some of your anger will melt away. I'm puzzled by this assertion: <<"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours." - Stephen Roberts >> I'm not sure whether it's your thinking or that of Stephen Roberts (or are YOU Stephen Roberts?) Didn't I say something about totality? I didn't dismiss all other possible gods. What I said was all other possible gods are contained within mine, and therefore He can't be dismissed.
