Andy, The carriers were not there because of the craftiness of Bull Halsey. IMO, the battleships would have been of some use to shell the islands before the landings. Also, there were a number of cruisers, and destroyers, that were sunk. Destroyers are particularly good at hunting subs, and both they, and the cruisers, are a big factor in protecting the carriers. From what an uncle of mine who was a naval officer in the Pacific, a number of cruisers took torpedoes aimed at the carriers. Maybe they wouldn't have made a really big difference, but some I think. It is true that the battleships would not have helped at Midway, or the Coral Sea but shelling the island beaches would have been right up their alley.
