When I was younger, and sported a "Jesus" look, I was scared of getting stranded in the rural South, and therefore tried not to go too far down there. On the other hand, more recently, I have been to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and seen interracial couples wander around town without raising an eyebrow. Nixon's downfall was mainly his own inability to rise above petty rancor. But being too respectful of intellectuals may have had a bad impact on policy.......
