what is an environmentalist

I think we all want a healthy environment in which to live--clean air, water and soils. I believe we all also wish to maintain the natural beauty our world offers. But, there are those who would go to any extreme to make miniscule differences, at any cost to property owners, taxpayers and businesses. These extremists, I call environmentalists. Perhaps it would be more accurate to call them environmental extremists.

For example, here in San Luis Obispo, we an ugly bush, the Manzinita, environmentally protected. But, it is everywhere. If one were to want to build a home on his own private property and a single Manzinita bush were in the way, you are practically on the level of a murderer in the eyes of environmental extremists if you want to pull it out (you are not allowed). There is no middle ground. You could leave a hundred thousand of them in, and want just one out for your building, but that won't change their minds.
