I dont buy the clinton stuff. New presidents are often tested and Bush adopted initial hard line in foreign policy. Remember how Krushchev initially walked all over JFK? Bush team is doing well and this will be settled somehow.

As far as your point about the double standard I agree 100% Plus if the US got ahold of Chinese military tech would we look at it. We once got an advanced russian plane from a defector and returned it to them in crates after we had taken it apart screw by screw. Double standard.

By the way, our plane was well beyond 12 mile limit. Chinese cant declare South china sea as theirs. US cant declare atlantic ocean as ours. So chinese are way off base here. Russian subs were always just off our coast and there was nothing we could do either.

OT - China, etc.

...but it is my contention that this would not have happened with the better relations that Clinton had. They didn't fly so close or threaten our planes then.

The Chinese were doing exactly that back then. They have been getting more and more aggressive with these intercepts over a year or more. This one is simply "the one" that went beyond the usual close call.

We went through something similar back in 1986, with "freedom of navigation" exercises in the Gulf of Sidra. Libya claimed that body of water as its territory, and after various escalations, got four of its fighters splashed.
