*FED'S MEYER SAYS U.S. SLOWDOWN "MUCH SHARPER" THAN HE EXPECTED

WASHINGTON, April 5 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Governor Laurence Meyer said on
Thursday the U.S. economic expansion has slowed much more sharply than he had foreseen,
and said it was difficult to forecast its future.

"I did not see the degree of slowdown which turned out to be much sharper than I expected,'
Meyer told an audience on legislative issues that was organized on Capitol Hill by Rep. Marty
Meehan, a Massachusetts Democrat.

Meyer spoke for about 30 minutes to the legislative, business and community leaders from
financial institutions and later took questions. One participant asked him whether his past
forecasts for the economy had always been accurate.

He acknowledged that the slowdown was sharper than he had foreseen and said "the degree of
uncertainty (in the U.S. economy) makes forecasts difficult."

Meyer did not take questions from reporters.

Paul: There is a slow steady rally taking place here. If it doesn't falter, the NAZ will finish +140 or higher. However, most of what I follow hasn't gained much from the first hour except the heavy weights (INTC, MSFT, DELL) which seem to be moving the NAZ higher. The question is, will the other stocks start to gain momentum? Right now the internals suggest that may happen. If it does, the NAZ will finish out very strong. We are entering a critical period in the day at this point. If the heavy weights start getting sold after 2:00 or so, we could be in for a nose dive. How are you reading the finish? Even with a strong finish, I am very concerned about the open tomorrow. Economic reports coming out tomorrow could put cold water on all this. GH
