Chinese have always been xenophobic. They view their country as center of the world and those outside as barbarians.

Please make the distinction here between the Communist Chinese regime and the people of China. Many(most?) of the people in China desire freedom as we have in the west, as is evidenced by Falun Gong demonstrations at the risk of death, Tiennamen Square, and regular protests within Tibet.

It should also be noted that China is still a very poor country; most people have no interest in politics unless it affects their daily life. One more thing to add: Discussing politics like this is largely a western luxury. Most of the world's population is too busy trying to find resources to feed and clothe their family as 50% of the world's population lives on less than two dollars a day.
