O.T.?? Sun Microsystems Markets Workstation With PC Pricing
Thursday, April 5, 2001
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sun Microsystems KK, the local arm of Sun Microsystems Inc., has begun to market a new entry-level workstation called the Sun Blade 100, which is priced starting from 168,000 yen -- putting it on par with the price of a personal computer.

Sun Microsystems also plans to market the Sun Blade 100 via its Web site in addition to through its regular sales partners. This will be the first time the company has targeted sales over the Internet to individual consumers in Japan. The goal is to broaden the base of Unix users.

The Sun Blade 100 sports the firm's proprietary 64-bit, UltraSPARC-IIe MPU. The model with the PGX64 2-D graphics accelerator is priced at 168,000 yen, while the model with the high-performance SunExpert 3-D Lite graphic-processing board is priced at 371,000 yen.

The company will begin shipping the machines from the end of April, targeting sales of 30,000 units in the first 12 months.
