What it boils down to is that they have our plane and our crew. They want to make a statement.
China also longs to be a world power, return to the days of Ming and Marco Polo.. Doing some flexing.
OTOH, the spy plane is there to keep tabs on any would be Taiwan invasion. That wouldn't be too good on the motherboard supply.
