Yes, the pendulum does swing. During the depression, there was a real need for a helping hand; soup kitchens, homeless, 25% unemployment, etc. Somewhere during the years, it swung the other way; welfare fraud, overspending, waste. My opinion is that we've been heading in the right direction, more towards the middle again. There is a worry on the left that the pendulum will swing too far the other way, which is why you see a lot of the rhetoric about the GOP as 'Get Old People', etc.

I don't know why we can't seem to stop the pendulum in the middle, but I guess it's because everyone has a 'different' middle. Those on both sides keep pushing it in their own direction. Guess that's political life in America.
