So, I guess forums like this are virtually assured of staying in business no matter what.

Finding the compromise, even if we don't judge it as a 'good' compromise, is key. Then, through action, we learn what works and what doesn't. It is when we stagnate, or when Washington does, we never move forward.

That's where Gingrich's boys brought some value. They helped break a mindset in Washington that had developed for years. Even though I found them to be personally distaste, and Gingrich himself repulsively smug, look at the change in mindset in the Democratic leadership since then. For the first time since FDR gave up on it, they view a balanced budget in a positive light, as a priority (well, mostly). This shift in thinking, I believe, will be viewed as a significant even in American history.
