Sure, chipsets are like glue logic chips that interface the microprocessor(s) with the rest of the PC or server, like PCI and memory buses. IBM is choosing to do their own chipset for IA64, I think because they want support for up to 32 (maybe 64?) processors in a server. Intel, I don't think, is going that high. Also, IBM will be building a lot of their well known RAS stuff, developed largely for mainframes, into that chipset.Tenchusatsu is the resident expert here on chipsets. I think he's said Intel is also putting a lot of RAS features into the Intel IA64 chipset. Here are some current Intel chipset types:
