I believe the US version, too, but wonder if it was wise to release it in the midst of delicate negotiations. It would seem best at a time like this to adopt a circumspect posture with no blaming of anyone. I wouldn't want to jeopardize the return of the crewmembers. I hope the release of this information was thought out in advance. I'm fairly certain it was, so there must be a reason for taking this pot-shot at a dead pilot.

We'll see.

I believe they also actually jettisoned some sensitive material, it would be hard (but maybe not impossible) to recover such stuff scattered on the ocean floor. In addition to other procedures I imagine, I'm sure all the scenarios have been thought of beforehand.

That would make sense given that they were most likely far enough out to sea when the incident took place.

Not that we would say outright that this is what was done.

A Bush
administration official said that Wang had been photographed by cameras mounted on American spy planes as he
flew within feet of them.

He said: "We have photos of pilots' faces. It was not the first time this individual had been that close to an aircraft.
<<The number of intercepts and their aggressiveness has increased in recent weeks." The allegation seemed certain to
heighten tensions. Chinese state media had already begun to laud the pilot as a hero martyred by reckless American
actions.>>
I would say this proves provocative actions on our part
and stupidity on the part of whoever released this info.
