Interesting premise. Yes, I think that would have meant a lot of pain for Russia. But, Japan could only go so far; they would have been as poor fighting in cold Siberia as Germany was at the gates of Moscow.

What Japan really wanted was two things: 1) an Empire that encompassed the other Asian countries (they coveted their role as the royalty of Asian races); 2) the raw resources of Malaysia, Java, etc. They did not really want a war with America; they just wanted us out of the way. Another interesting scenerio would have been if they had NOT attacked Pearl, and had not bombed Clark Field, but instead just invaded the Philipines, Malaysia, etc. Would our response have been as pointed, and as resolute? The hesitancy may have given them time to grab what they wanted, and then call for peace.

Maybe we should start a WWII thread :)

I totally agree that, had the carriers been at Pearl, and sunk, it would have taken much longer for us to even get in the Pacific war.
