I disagree. The crew had every right to expect something more than hostility. This *mission* of theirs is something that is done by more then just the Americans on a very frequent basis. It was stated that the downed Chinese pilot was one that the crew members all recognized from previous missions. It was a terrible accident that got even worse because the Chinese over reacted.

<< Those 24 crew members aren't heros, they are morons,
whose military career is history. >>
They are neither heroes or morons, just guys/girls going to daily work,
albeit more dangerous than average. As to ditching in the sea water is not soft and the chances
of surviving the crash and being rescued are low. It is unlikely the Chinese got a great deal of information
as the self destruct mechanisms work quite well as do the shredders. As one who has spent many a lonely hour over water(flying) the last place I would want to land is in the sea if I had an alternative. And, incidentally, I did not realize the Chinese were our enemies at the time of the incident. Our sailors and airmen do a
difficult job under trying circumstances. Try backing them instead of knocking

Actually the pilot couldn't ditch the plane - the flaps were torn off and he couldn't slow down, which is what you need to do to ditch.

Hope you don't think it should be standard operating procedure to crash the plane in those circumstances. You'd have a hard time recruiting people for suicide missions.
