Don, don't know if you saw the local news tonight, but our favorite utility on this side of the Lake (Seattle City Light) is keeping the surplus it sucked out of us earlier this year through higher electricity rates (seems conservation was just too successful!) and is plowing it back into....ta da....green traffic lights to supplement the red lights now being installed.

My frustration over another government beaurocracy keeping my money was softened by the fact that CREE might be making some of those high brightness LEDS. They should buy American for those, don't you think?

Yes, and the sooner folks get into the habit of buying more LED lighting the better, because that will help ease the energy crisis in a big way.....
I made my own LED night light by screwing in a 40 red LED exit sign bulb on a standard 7 watt night light base. It cost $14.95, and should last over ten years. I do not recommend doing this with an automatic shutoff night light, as it did not work right with the one I tried it on.
