Actually, many brokerage firms make that act very difficult these days, so it usually pays to kiss them off for a few pennies. To stay with them all the way to zero can cause some "back office" nimwits can tie up capital on the grounds that "the stock could come back". I recall one situation where I had to send a certain incredibly dense credit manager all of the judge's rulings before he finally understood that "the old stock no longer will exist after April 1, 2000" meant what it said. (g).
