I don't know if this is the most efficient way but...

in a column next to the column you have your letters in do a IF/THEN. IF value is "A" then 1 (not proper syntax as I work with staroffice I am not certain of excel syntax)

After creating the IF/Then for the first row you can copy the formula down by highlighting from the cell with the IF/THEN down to the last row where you need it to calculate. After it is highlighted go to Edit: Fill: down

Now you should have the values you need to sum.

Use the countif function. Here's what you would need for your example.

=COUNTIF(B3:B12,"A")
