That in and of itself is meaningless. But the shift from a manufacturing economy to a consuming economy is not without cost. Maybe I should say "not ordinarily without cost."

Maybe we are experiencing another paradigm shift. The household no longer manufactures, it consumes. The household no longer makes spins thread, weaves cloth, or makes clothes. The household no longer grows food, or makes bread. The division of labor transcends households.

Maybe we are at an inflection point where we can offload all these domestic services, not to actual servants, but to virtual servants, offshore.

I think that's dangerous, but that doesn't change reality.
