Most of my experience is on embedded systems, using SUNW hardware as the host development machines. Couple of decades worth (well more or less).

Unlike you, I am looking for an argument. It helps me forget about the carnage my portfolio has taken recently :)

Sorry if I annoyed you, but 5% performance hit (if it really is that low) is no big deal. My initial guess was 25% for that kind of disabling, and it may well be that high. But, IMO, still no big deal due to the other architectural limitations of large systems in real applications talking to other real machines, not benchmarks.
