davidd, >>I would be loathe to draw any larger meaning from their behaviour:

You are probably right. Their were a lot of American "big spenders" in the 1920's that became "very" conservative in the 1930's, 1940's, 1950's, 1960's (until they went to their graves); could the same thing happen again?

California has got to be toast this summer...in addition to the problems the rest of the country faces with the bubble....(1) you've got tech layoffs and general horrible sentiment because of bursting of bubble/layoffs w/tech industry so big there (2) Hollywood actors (and other guilds) strike (3) Energy prices, both consumer and business...(4) Big RE bubble likely to strain/burst there first...

How California avoids a deep recession this summer is beyond me...I'd think their citizens have just as big a debt load as J5P, and possibly a greater exposure to tech. Even if they don't, the stream of bad news, higher energy costs...well, if that doesn't get them to saving (and killing consumer spending), then there is something wrong with those people...

C'mon to think of it, they are Californians....it would be par for course <G>

With California biting the weenie, how great are things going to be across rest of U.S? Hmmm..
