It's going to take time to drive down the prices. When SanDisk/Toshiba get to a .13 process on 300 mm wafers, variable cost may be cut in half from today's cost. Volume increases will reduce the impact of fixed costs.

My WAG is that Christmas season 2002 will see a dramatic reduction in the cost/selling price of flash cards, maybe to 1/3 of today's prices.

Sam, it's quite simple to mask a single 512Mbit flash chip into a single-chip, 64MB CF or MMC card. If we knew the die size stats for current SNDK flash products, it wouldn't take a genius to compute the cost-per-card for next-generation products.

Die sizes (in mm^2) are commonly published for CPUs such as the Intel PIII but I don't recall ever reading a word about the flash used in CF or MMC. Is there anyone out there who knows the die sizes for current SNDK product(s)?
