Thanks for the reply and sorry mine is so late.

Agree with planting less as a general rule. 2 Cantalope are about all I can handle and I am still giving them away at work. Same with the melons when I can keep my dog from using them as balls to play with. ( I put up an old fashioned electric fence this year and he learned quick that area was off limits so I don't expect a problem this year -ggg-)

My tomatoes are always hit and miss though. The one crop that anyone can do and mine tend to either do great or nothing. I know it is me though since they are so tolerant, I tend to put them in my weakest soils along with beans, peas etc. I use my best soil for the other stuff.

Unfortunately it will probably be that way again this year. I am digging a pond in my yard and the dirt coming out of the bottom of that pond is the worst clay I have seen in years. I am dumping it over a plot area that was a bit low and used to collect water. I am hoping I can get enough sand and gypsum mixed in to break the clay up I am dumping on top to make it bearable for the tomatoes, beans and peas this year. The beans and peas should help the soil for next year. I am also mixing in some peat moss but the prices have sky rocketed on that stuff so I am going a bit lighter than I probably should figuring I can hit it again next year.

My 20 X 80 plot is already planted so all I have left is a 4 X 60 and a 4 X 20 strip that I have to wait until it warms up a bit more. I may try your elevated box thing there. Do you use old manure or the hotter stuff that is more fresh right off the ranch? I always used the old stuff but a few people out here swear by the hot stuff in spring. I am afraid I will burn the seedlings though.

Anyway, Good Luck,

Lee
