One of the areas that got hit hard in the unemployment rate was health services. Here in California, the HMOs are caught in a trap. They signed long term contracts last year with a lot of companies with guaranteed rates, and then got hit with rapidly rising energy costs. Hospitals can't turn out the lights, shut off the heat, or pull the plug on equipment. The one of the few options they have for controlling cost is to lay off workers.
