Wireless Handset Sales Plummet During First Quarter
April 6, 2001 (SEOUL) -- Despite the introduction of new marketing campaigns by local telecom handset manufacturers, wireless handset sales in Korea plummeted during the first quarter of the year.

The nation's top three wireless handset manufacturers, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., and Hyundai Eelectronics Industries Co., Ltd., sold a combined 2.7 million handsets during the first quarter of the year, half of the number of handsets sold during the same period a year earlier.

A recession in the local economy and anti-trust regulations that restrict SK Telecom Co., Ltd. and Shinsegi Telecomm Inc. from accepting more clients (the two companies currently hold over 50 percent market control of the local wireless market) were the main attributes for the fall in handset sales, industry watchers said.

However, the market is expected to pick up during the latter half of the year as SK Telecom plans to strengthen its marketing strategies and telecom companies are betting on strong sales of new CDMA 2000-1X handsets, set to be released during the second half of the year, industry watchers added.
