Bluetooth, memory, cameras....

...and other random jottings. Fear ye not, for a while at least, for several reasons.

1) Bluetooth can only be used if you are in range of something to transfer to. If you are on holiday, then the likelihood is that your camera wont be able to connect to your bluetooth enabled PC at home! In one mode at least, its just a substitution for IR or wire.

2)When travelling I use email via GSM on my Palm. At 9.6k, for small text files, it is still painful (but preferable to lugging a laptop around Europe just to read a few emails). Use it to transfer dozens to hundreds of 500k to 1Mb or larger files? No thanks.

3)Once you've transferred such files once on holiday (this may not apply to holidays in your own country) and have seen the phone bill you'll never do it again! I spent 3 days in Paris a couple of months ago. Made a fairly low number of calls, mostly data. Cost was, I approximate, $250 (roaming in Europe is about 10x normal cost). If that had been for transferring pictures, then next time I'd buy an extra CF card or two. { You'll notice that all these press articles talking about transferring pictures never mention the cost of the call. No wonder }

4) Will 3G alter this? maybe, when its available, when we've seen the costs, when the coverage covers the beach and hotel destinations and not just city centres.

5) Increasing demand for bigger memories (higher pixel cameras, longer MP3's, bigger Palms) will exacerbate all the above.

6) Even with bluetooth, you wont always be in range, so you may want to have to have that extra storage 'just in case'. Even today, with the high cost of CF, internet cafe's and camera stores dont generally offer facilities to enable tourists to transfer files.

Ramblings over. Sorry.
