If you really want to talk about this with me I'll be happy to, but we'll have to examine more tradeoffs than just cheap shirts vs. expensive shirts.

Like, why are American goods more expensive? Well, there are unions. Are unions good things or bad things? And there is OSHA. Is worker protection a good thing or a bad thing? And there is the EPA. Is protecting the environment a good thing or a bad thing? And there are taxes. Are the programs the taxes pay for good or bad?

And if all these things are good, then why shouldn't we pay for them? And if it's silly to pay for them, then why do we have them?

And if we think they are good things, then why do we buy things from countries that don't have those good things?

And if our government thinks these are good things, then why does it make the dollar strong so that we can buy things cheaper from countries that don't have these good things?

When I think of textile workers, I think of the women I see shopping at WalMart. They are buying cheap foreign goods and putting themselves out of work. No skin off my nose, I'm not a textile worker.

At the height of Imperial Rome, the Imperial City was filed with unemployed people who were kept passive with bread and circuses. Is that our fate?
