During its meeting, Dell Chief Financial Officer James Schneider emphasized that even last quarter, when things were so tough for PC makers, his company managed to gain market share, grow faster than the market and drive inventory down to a record five-day level. In the current quarter, he said, management believes they're continuing to ``profitably take market share.'' While some analysts questioned whether the company was giving up too much in terms of margins to gain share, Chief Executive Michael Dell just shrugged. The company is maintaining ``healthy'' operating margins, he said, while continuing to grow. Dell also noted that he wouldn't use a higher-end product to subsidize ones on the lower end — presumably PCs — as many competitors do. In rosier times, such a lackluster report might have met with a massive sell-off. But Thursday it was sweet music to the ears of investors who've heard company after company deliver bad news. Downturn or no downturn, recession or no recession, if you can buy a company with Dell's resume for half it's average multiple, it's a hard proposition to turn down. And so far this year, the smart investors have been buying. biz.yahoo.com You know Scott...He's trying to "Buy" all the others by dropping his margins...Yeah, but what most haven't figured is the entry into the higher end and gaining something like 80% of all the new business is going to raise his margins due to the servers and storage...I believe it will take some time and some profit but if they are still profitable and knocking the others out I'm all for it...Let's face it... What would it really cost? I had someone mention to me once that DELL could do this for 8 quarters and sacrifice $6 Billion in profits and virtually "buy" the others for this amount...Pretty good deal huh??? :o) I would bet big bucks he'll never outright buy anyone else's business...Why waste the time when he's making money and putting them all out of business? Hell he told us all this in Jan. 2000 but no one paid attention...Have you heard an analyst even mention this? :o) "A million old soldiers will fade away...But,__________" Best,Kemble
