Israeli-Palestinian fighting escalates

Friday, April 06, 2001 11:33 AM EDT

GAZA, Apr 06, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- At least 50
Palestinians were injured Friday during an escalation of violence that included
rocket and mortar fire at several locations in the Gaza Strip and West Bank,
Palestinians sources said.

Israeli military sources said Palestinians fired four mortar shells at the
Jewish settlement of Nitzarim south of Gaza City, adding that none of the
Israeli settlers was injured. The sources said that Israeli tanks fired at the
areas where the mortars were placed.

Palestinian witnesses living at the southern seaside of Gaza City reported
several explosions and intensive gunfire during the early hours of Friday. Chief
of public security in Gaza Brig. Saeb El Aajez said Israeli helicopters and
boats shelled several locations belonging to Palestinian security in northern
Gaza.

Palestinian sources said at least five Palestinians were injured during the
shelling. The sources did not provide a breakdown of where the other injuries
occurred.

The Israeli shelling came shortly after Palestinians fired several mortar bombs
toward the Jewish settlement of Nisanit, Morag and other five settlements into
the Gaza Strip.

In spite of efforts to end the ongoing confrontations, fighting has escalated
since Iyyad Hardan, the Islamic Jihad militant leader, was killed Thursday in
the West Bank town of Jenin. The Palestinians blamed Israeli intelligence forces
for the killing.

Since the beginning of the ongoing confrontations in late September, 469 deaths
have been attributed to the intifada.
